A Passion for Helping People

Dr. Judy Leung has been fascinated by human interaction and behaviour since she was a child. Not surprisingly, she took an interest in psychology and completed her undergraduate degree in psychology in 1978. She started her career soon after her graduation.

She began her career in the area of Drugs & Alcohol working with the Department of Health and Area Health Services, later moving onto Child & Family work. In 1989 she established her own private practice.

In her private practice, her work led her into areas of employee assistance services, rehabilitation and pain management, workers compensation and third party insurance assessment, neuropsychological assessment, treatment of abuse and trauma, organisational development and supervision services for other professionals. During this period, she had subcontracted to Vietnam Veterans Counselling Services, Victims of Crime Tribunal, Davidson Trahaire, Corpsych, Mentoring, as well as provided services to the Department of Education, the NSW Police Services, the Department of Community Services, the Department of Social Security, and Women’s Health organisations.

Throughout her career, Judy has continued her personal and professional training and has gained many certificates and diplomas in different treatment modalities. In the 1990’s she became the faculty member of the Illawarra Gestalt Centre providing training and supervision in Gestalt therapy. In 2004, she co-founded the Gestalt Practitioners Training Sydney with Dr. Mike Reed. She remained its co-director until 2008.

Judy was instrumental in establishing the Shoalhaven Branch of the Australian Psychological Society Pty Ltd in the late 1980’s and was its chairperson for a period of time. In 1996, she was also involved in the inaugural set up of Gestalt Australia New Zealand (GANZ), the peak body that governs Gestalt therapy training in Australia and New Zealand.

In 1997 she commenced her postgraduate training in psychology, eventually graduating with a doctorate in psychology in 2004. Her thesis focused on examining neuropsychological assessments on driving for those who have sustained brain injury.

Judy continues to find new challenges in her career. She has delivered papers and workshops throughout Australia and overseas. In 2006, she was one of several psychologists selected by the NSW Psychologists Registration Board to facilitate its “Train the Trainers” workshops across the state – the training of psychologists as supervisors to intern psychologists for the purpose of registration.

Judy believes that her passion for working with people has not waned through the years but has continued to grow in different directions. She believes that no two human experiences can be exactly the same due to the unique interaction between personality, family values and social environment. Therefore, she continues to be fascinated by what people brings, the twists and turns of each person’s story, the meaning they make of it, and how he/she can develop, learn and evolve out of encountering life’s difficulties.

Everyone Counts.
